Editing The Category Menu Bar

The Category Menu Bar is the top-level navigation that allows users to move between categories in the app. Within each Category Template in Contentful, you can also define or edit:

  • Navigation Filters – appear on the secondary navigation bar under the category

  • Search Filters – appear in that category’s search window

  • Category Card – the visual card style for that category

The following fields can be updated in Contentful:

  • Category Name

  • Card Style

  • Navigation Filters

  • Category Search Filters


Steps to Editing The Category Menu Bar

Step 1: Open the Content View

Select the Content tab in the Contentful dashboard, located in the upper-left corner of the screen. This opens the Content View.


Step 2: Open General Configurations

In the views panel on the lower-left side of the screen, select General Configurations.


Step 3: Open the Default General Configurations Template

Locate the Default Configuration Template and click to open it.


Step 4: Open A Category Template

Scroll down to the Categories section and click to open the category you want to edit.

  • To edit an existing category, select it from the list.

  • To create a new category, click Add Content. Both actions open the same Category Template.


Step 5: Edit Category Fields

Within the Category Template, complete or update the following four sections:

1. Name (required)

  • This is the title of the category that appears in the app

  • Character limit: 14 characters


2. Card Style (required)

  • Allows you to edit or create a new card visual style for a category

  • See Editing Card Styles for detailed steps


3. Nav Filters (optional)

  • Filters that will appear on the secondary nav under this category

  • They are limited to nine total

4. Search Filters (optional)

  • Filters that will appear on this category's search window

  • To edit and existing search filter or create a new one see Editing Search Filter Templates for detailed steps


Step 6: Publish Your Changes Click the green Publish button in the upper-right corner of the screen to publish your new edits.

Note: All edits to any field in this template must be published to appear in the app.

If any required items are missing, Contentful will display an error message.
