Steps to Add a Video File

Video files—like audios, PDFs, and images—are nested within three layers of templates.

  1. First, the audio file must be imported into a File Asset Template.

  2. The File Asset Template is placed inside an Video Asset Template.

  3. The Audio Asset Template is then nested inside the Video and Text Page Template.

Step 1: Add Media

Scroll to the Video field and click Add media. You’ll see two options:

Select Existing Media

  • Choose an audio file that already exists in Contentful

  • It will be inserted automatically—no additional setup needed

Upload New Media

  • Select a file from your desktop or local folder

  • New audio files must first be added to an Audio Asset Template

  • See the next section for detailed instructions

Step 2: Complete the Video Asset Template

  • Once inside the Video Asset Template, complete the required fields (see details below).

  • You can also live preview and publish from this screen.

Step 3: Publish the Video Asset

  • Click the green Publish button in the upper-right corner to publish your new video file.

Reminder: If any required fields are missing, Contentful will display an error message.

Video Asset Template Configuration

To use a video file in the application, it must first be imported into a Video Asset Template, which is then nested inside the Video and Text Page Template.

Once inside the Video Asset Template, you'll see fields for:

  • Video Info (required)

  • Video (required)

  • Captions (required)

  • Credit (optional)

All required fields must be completed to use the file on an video page.

Video assets must be published in both the Video File Template and the Video Asset Template to appear in the app.

Video Asset Template Fields

Video Info (Required)

  • Used for internal reference only

  • Does not appear in the app

  • Also acts as the title of the asset within its parent container

  • Character limit: 256 characters

Video (Required)

This is where you upload a new audio file or use one that’s already in Contentful.

To upload a new video file:

  1. Use the file selector to choose a file from your device.

  2. The video file must be embedded inside a Video File Template, which is then nested inside the Video Asset Template

Think of the Video Asset Template like the Focal Point Image Template—one lives inside the other, and both act as containers for specific media types.

Captions (Required)

  • Upload a WebVTT (.vtt) caption file to display captions with your video

  • Caption files are imported like any other media type (images, videos, etc.)

  • See “Uploading an Image to File Selector” for detailed instructions

Credit (optional)

  • Enter a credit for the video file

  • Maximum length: 200 characters

Video File Template Fields

Video File Template Fields

Inside the Video File Template, complete the following fields:

  • File (required)

Once the file is uploaded and processed:

  • The file preview will display in the window

  • The file name becomes the title of the asset container

  • Use the file selector (same process as with images) to choose a video file to import
